"MY FUNNIEST TRAFFIC stop story?"
Kate nodded and pushed her salad aside. "I've heard every cop has one, and I want to hear yours."
"Hmm..." He tapped his fingers on the tabletop. "Don't forget that most of my law enforcement career was spent in the military. Military cops and detectives don't make a lot of traffic stops."
"You're stalling. I know you can come up with something."
The smile he sent across the table flipped Kate's heart onto its side and sent heat rushing up her neck. She grabbed her glass of tea and took a deep drink while he thought about her request. She was grateful that the conversational ball was in his court, since her ability to speak had temporarily vanished.
Nicolas straightened in his chair. "OK, not really a traffic stop, and more scary than funny." He crossed his arms on the table and leaned forward. "One evening I'm coming home from dinner in the city, and I see flashers on the side of the road. I slow down, and once I get closer, I can see that the car has a flat tire. But beyond that, there's this shirtless guy pacing back and forth on the passenger side of the vehicle. It's getting dark and cold, so I stop to see if I can help. I'm out of my car, yelling at him, because traffic is zipping by so fast, and he can't hear me. He finally moves to where I can see him from the waist down. The guy is buck naked."
Kate covered her mouth with her hand. "On the side of the road?"
Nicolas nodded. "Yep, in all of his birthday-suit glory. So, he comes around the car and he's got his keys clutched in one hand and a nearly empty whiskey bottle in the other. He looks at me without a care in the world and tells me how glad he is that I stopped to help, because he can't get to his spare. He was trying to use the trunk key on the hood."
Kate snorted. "What did you do?"
"I was out of uniform and in my own car, but I hustled him into the back seat with a blanket. When I got him back to the station, his BAC was point-two-six."
"BAC?"
"Blood alcohol concentration," Nicolas explained.
"Oh, and that's a lot?"
Nicolas sat back and picked up his own drink. "DUI for Oklahoma is point-oh-eight. For his body weight...I'd say he'd consumed the whole bottle of liquor in just under an hour."
Kate shivered. "That's horrible."
"Told you. When I look back at the whole incident, I remember thinking God must have poked His finger through that guy's tire Himself. If that stooge had stayed on the road in that condition...it was just a matter of time before he killed himself or someone else."
She leaned across the table. "It's hard to get away from it, isn't it?"
"It?"
"That religious upbringing. Even when we aren't living where we should, it still has moments when it sneaks up on us."
Nicolas nodded. "That's a fact."
"And then when
